What every tourist should know about Italy

Italy has long been a popular tourist destination. It has a fascinating history and a lot of western culture can be traced back to this country that is shaped a bit like a boot. This is the home of the Roman Empire and for Catholics around the world is where the head of their church spends most of his time. Italy has long been considered a romantic destination with places like Venice being the ideal honeymoon location. No visit to Europe will be complete unless you have spent a bit of time in Italy.

Most visitors to Italy will want to spend a bit of time in Rome. This is home to 16% of the world's artistic treasures and this is a truly impressive figure when you consider how much art there is in the world. Rome is known as ‘the eternal city' because it has always played a major role in European history. There is just so much to see here; you will want to visit the coliseum where people used to once come to watch other people kill each other or do battle with lions. There are many reminders of the ancient Roman Empire spread around the city. No visit to Rome will be complete without a visit to the Vatican; this is actually treated as a separate state within Italy.

Venice is the city of water and was once a separate country from the rest of Italy. Many have claimed that it is the most beautiful city on the planet and few go there without begin truly impressed. Venice is full of bridges that connect the 118 small islands that make up the city. Venice is considered the most important tourist destination on the planet due to its beauty and art.

Pisa is another popular destination. Here you will find one of the wonders of world with the spectacular leaning tower. This tower had poorly laid foundations and has been shifting from its horizontal position since 1173. The sight of this wonder makes a visit to Pisa well worth it.

Florence is another Italian city full of art and beautiful buildings, and it was the capital of the country once for five years. It is considered the home of the Italian Renaissance and even today it is viewed one the most important city in Europe for different art forms. In 1882 UNESCO listed Florence as a world heritage site. Over a million and a half tourists visit this city every year.

Italian Pizza is now one of the most popular meals in the world, but this is only a minor aspect of the food of the country. Food is important for Italians and there is something on offer for all palates. Food in Venice can be expensive, but a meal is reasonably priced in much of the country.

As you can see there is quite a bit on offer for visitors to Italy. If you love beauty and art then this is going to a place that stays in your heart for ever. In fact Italy seems to have something to offer everyone.
